The call came out and I answered strong<br />
For Patria rose I up<br />
I knew not what she would demand<br />
When I partook of this trembling cup

My bounden duty was I taught to do<br />
And accoutred with a helm<br />
The rifle's crucifer was I sent forth<br />
Into the killing realm

When with the foe we fought and slew<br />
We communed there in the mud<br />
Our bodies were the Eucharist<br />
And our baptism our blood

Like sheep, around here human life is cheap
