Verse 1

Still night, three o'clock
The fog creeps into town
You can't see past the next two blocks
Your gaze is driven down

'Cause you can't see the stars that shine in the sky
The fog is way too dense
Can't see another person, wave hello
To try would make no sense

The neighbours' human visages all eclipsed
Amidst the mist, one cannot glimpse
The girl immersed in books
Hurling into a literary world unfurling and purling before her, percolating inside her brainpan,
The man standing as he hammers out a jam at his piano,
His fix consisting of eliciting licks with the flick of his wrist and mixing rhythmic tricks into a musical apocalypse
The child with building bricks
He unpicks and affixes until his vision sticks, his starfish mitts twist in stout, determined fists:
Isolate, disparate, forsaken, in schism
Within the abysm of the mist.

Between the heat and cold there is the fog
And human warmth is spread increasing thin

Chorus

Separation, slow dispersion
Of tiny points of light
Soon achieving cold inertion
They can't contend against entropic end

Verse 2

With heads bowed down to trace our steps
Count cracks and crevices
We never lift our eyes to meet the gaze
Of the cloud of witnesses

Eking out our feeble lives
Tired roles we endlessly reprise
Never seeing face to face
In one fell stroke we are erased

Bridge

The Word came to me in a roundabout way
So I'm calling on that ancient Muse
And as I stand before you now
I see your faces unconfused

Between the cold and heat there is the fog
Sparks are flying upward on the wind

Verse 3

The everpresent cloud of smoke
Rising from the coals, be still my soul
Eclipsing faces 'midst the gentle but unwavering light
Stand aright!

The Lord possessed me at the first
By the Self-same wrought the renewal of the earth
Remember, Man, that dust thou art
A dying ember on the hearth

Chorus 2

Between the cold and heat there is the fog
We lose our heat without the flame within

Separation, slow dispersion
Into the chill of night
Unfit alone to bear the burden
We face the end - Wisdom! Let us attend.
