Verse 1

Still night: the phone glows three o'clock
The fog descends upon the town
The farthest one can see not past a block
The stars are hid, the gaze driven down

The neighbours' faces all eclipsed
Amidst the fog, one cannot glimpse
The girl immersed in books, the man
Asleep, the child with starfish hands
Curled in stout, determined fists
Assembling worlds with building bricks:
Isolated and in schism
In the abysm of the mist

Chorus

Between the heat and cold there is the fog
And human warmth is spread increasing thin

Separation, slow dispersion
Of tiny points of light
Soon achieving cold inertion
They can't contend against entropic end

Verse 2

With heads bowed down to trace our steps
Count cracks, avoid the crevices
We never lift our eyes to meet the gaze
Of the cloud of silent witnesses

Eking out our feeble lives
Tired roles we endlessly reprise
Never seeing face to face
In one fell stroke we are erased

Bridge

The Word came to me in a roundabout way
So I'm calling on that ancient Muse
And as I stand before you now
I see your faces unconfused

Feeling like a voice in the wilderness
I'm just as alone as all the rest
Behold the book I must impart
The scroll inscribed upon my broken heart

Between the cold and heat there is the fog
Sparks are flying upward on the wind

Verse 3

The everpresent cloud of smoke, the mist
Which rises from the coals, thrice-blest
Eclipsing faces 'midst the gentle but unwavering effluence of light
Stand aright!

The Lord possessed me at the first
By the Self-same wrought the renewal of the earth
Remember, Man, that dust thou art
A dying ember on the hearth

Chorus 2

Between the cold and heat there is the fog
We lose our heat without the flame within

Separation, slow dispersion
Into the chill of night
Unfit to bear the crushing burden
We face the end - Wisdom! Let us attend.
